Scientists were able to collect all the necessary data thanks to the Gaia Space Telescope, which belongs to the European Space Agency. It is noted that the map contains enough details for astronomers to measure the acceleration of the solar system and calculate the mass of the galaxy.
By plotting the positions and motions of the stars, the telescope detected destructive processes outside the Milky Way: a faint stream of stars observed between two neighboring galaxies is evidence that the more massive Large Magellanic Cloud is steadily eating the smaller Small Magellanic Cloud.
