These studies not only provide answers about the nature of art but also help us better understand how the human brain functions.
What Happens in the Brain When We Create?
Several brain regions are activated during the creation of art. Itβs not just the visual cortex, which is responsible for perceiving shapes and colors, but also the frontal cortex β the center of strategic thinking, planning, and decision-making. Research using fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) shows that creative tasks activate the so-called “default mode network” β a network of regions responsible for internal thoughts, memories, imagination, and mental imagery.
When a painter draws or a musician improvises, the prefrontal cortex β especially its medial part β is engaged. It allows the integration of experience, emotions, and knowledge, forming a unique artistic statement. At the same time, the activity of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, responsible for self-control and evaluation, decreases. This partially explains the “flow” effect β a state in which a person is fully immersed in the creative process, forgetting about everything else.
Genetics and Neuroplasticity: Innate or Acquired?
Many people wonder whether individuals are born with talent or if creative abilities can be developed. Neuroscience offers an ambiguous but encouraging answer. On one hand, there are indeed genetic predispositions for the development of certain abilities, including creativity. On the other hand, the brain has a high degree of neuroplasticity β the ability to change in response to experience, learning, and practice. This means that even those who donβt consider themselves artists or musicians can develop creative thinking with enough practice and motivation.
Interestingly, professional artists and musicians with over ten years of experience show noticeable changes in brain structure. An increase in gray matter density in areas responsible for sensorimotor coordination, visual perception, and emotional regulation indicates that creative practice literally reshapes the brain.
The Role of Emotions and the Subconscious in Art Creation
Creativity is unimaginable without an emotional component. Emotions not only color perception but also stimulate the creative process. During moments of inspiration, the limbic system β the emotional center, including the amygdala and hippocampus β becomes active. These regions help connect personal experiences with visual and musical images, turning internal experiences into artistic expression.
The subconscious also plays a major role. Research shows that many ideas come precisely during moments of relaxation, rest, or sleep. This happens because the interaction between the brainβs default network and areas responsible for memory and associations intensifies during such times. Thus, our subconscious is constantly working on creative tasks, even when weβre not aware of it.

The neuroscience of perceiving art is just as fascinating. When a person looks at a painting or listens to music, a cascade of brain reactions is triggered. The visual cortex deciphers colors and shapes, while the limbic system evaluates the emotional response. At the same time, personal experience plays a crucial role: the same artwork can evoke completely different emotions in different people depending on their past, cultural context, and associative links.
Interestingly, perceiving art can activate the same brain regions as real-life experiences. For example, when watching an emotionally charged scene in a theater or film, the viewerβs empathy-related areas and mirror neurons become active. This creates a sense of empathy, which is why we become so deeply involved in the artistic process.
Creativity as a Neurocognitive Resource
Current research increasingly emphasizes the importance of creativity not only for artists but for everyone. Creative activity improves memory, cognitive flexibility, and emotional intelligence. In European countries, including the Czech Republic, programs in art therapy and creative thinking are increasingly being integrated into education and healthcare. This is because art helps people cope with stress, develop empathy, and improve overall quality of life.
Thus, neuroscience and creativity are not two separate worlds but closely connected fields that reveal the mysteries of human nature. The brain creates art, but art in turn shapes the brain, making it more flexible, perceptive, and harmonious as an instrument of perception and self-expression.
